Event 1 (Jackie)
6:56.8. My best
time a week ago was 7:19, and I wanted to get under 7 badly. This was the first
time I did everything unbroken, it hurt, and was good for 13th
place. I think I am the happiest with my
performance on this event. Rowing and thrusters used to be major weaknesses for
me, but I was able to keep up and capitalize on my strength with the pull-ups.
I think I passed at least 5-6 girls in my heat on the pull up bar. My time on
this sometime last year was 7:57.
Event 2 (OHS)
160 x 2. I was
ridiculously nervous about this event because I knew I had to take a gamble and
start at 155, which is my current 3RM. I was so nervous I accidentally warmed
up to a double at 145 with 50min before my heat started. Arjuna came back and
told me to chill out, but then I had to warm it up again and feel 155 for a
single right before we got called back to line up. Then we proceeded to wait
around for 15-20min in our corrals. My legs and arms still felt shaky from
Jackie (and from my nerves). I missed my second rep at 155 on my first attempt.
I really just wanted to collapse on my platform and start crying, but I told
myself I didn’t work this hard to end here, and got it on the 2nd
attempt. This lightened my mood for the whole rest of the weekend. I went on to
get 160 x2, I think I could have pushed more, but my elbow was hurting pretty
bad by this point and I wanted to do well on the muscle ups.
Event 3 (Burpee Muscle Ups)
25 in 7min cap.
This was fun. My former Kent State gymnastics teammate of 4 years (roommate for
3 years), Sam Heydlauff, was right next to me on this workout. We took an early
lead in our heat and were battling rep for rep as Miranda Oldroyd was
announcing and playing up our race to the crowd. Sam told me earlier she was
going to comfortably finish this workout in the timecap. We pushed each other
so hard that we both started failing towards the end. My triceps were unusually
fatigued on these, pretty sure from Jackie. I missed about 2 reps because I couldn’t
lock out. Sam got 27 reps and grumbled that she usually never misses
muscle-ups. But there’s room for me to improve here. Muscle-ups are a strength
for me and I want to be unbeatable at these. I achieved my minimum goal of 25
reps, but was 8th place. I need to be in the top 3 when these come
up.
Event 4 (100’s)
47 Alt DB Snatches in
25min cap. I wanted at least 50
snatches, so I was really close to that. My pistols and C2B pull-ups were
great. WALL BALLS! I am SO MAD about these. It took me 7:00 to finish 100, I
was dead last after these (I was in the top heat for this workout). I
consistently finished 50 reps to 10ft in about 2:30 every time in training. The
target really messed me up, I kept hitting the bottom and it would bounce off
and land on my head. Or I would get the ball to height, but it would just float
in front of the target. I must have had 10-15 no reps because of the damn
target. My arms fatigued a lot. We bought a target from Rogue and I need to use
that to 10’ for the whole next year. And do 20# wall balls. These have improved
so much in the past year and it definitely did not show at Regionals. My snatches were also slow, some people
caught me on those after I had caught up on pullups and pistols. 10 more reps
would have improved my 17th place by 8 spots.
Event 5 (Deadlift)
Finished all but the
9 box jumps in 8min cap. This is 2 reps better than in practice, and my
back was really fatigued from the 100’s to start. This is also nearly a 4min PR
from 2 years ago. But, I was 38th place. This was absolutely
devastating after how well I had been doing, dropping from 12th to
20th place from one event. DEADLIFTS ARE A MAJOR WEAKNESS!
Event 6 (Gymnastics/Axel Bar)
10:17.4. I knew I
had to make up ground here. I started this workout exactly as practiced. The
shoulder to overhead were really really tough. My arms felt like wet noodles,
but I just got them done. My time in practice was 9:48. But, I won my heat by
1:30. It was hard to keep pushing on the lunges when no one was behind me, but
I was trying to compete with the girls in the top heat that had yet to go. This
was 4th place and bumped me back up to 15th place.
Event 7 (Rope Climb/Squat Clean)
7:08. I did
steady singles on the squat cleans. This is a full minute PR on this workout,
and my body was so tired going in to it, but I just was so happy to be done I
just kept moving. This was 27th place. I need to work on rope
climbs, and continue to work on moving big weight fast! This was good for now,
but I see that I can be much better on something like this.
OVERALL
I ended up 16th place
and did not achieve my overall goal of being in the top 10. I am devastated
with my place on the deadlift event and frustrated with a few others. The deadlifts held me back big time and made it
difficult to be really excited about my performance. But, there were a lot of
positive things as well. I did not have a single no-rep for squat depth. This
means my squatting mechanics have come so far, because this used to be my most
common no-rep. I did better than I expected on almost everything. And my body
held up very well. I felt awful going into Event 7, but once I got warmed up
everything felt fine! I only had a minor tear from pull-ups, my hands were used
to handling the high reps on these. Overall, I felt very well prepared.
One of the
most inspiring moments for me this weekend was watching Lindy Wall on Day 3.
She was in 5th after Day 2, but you could tell she was on a mission
to qualify in that 3rd spot. On both of the Day 3 workouts, she just
absolutely took off like a crazy person, leading the pack from start to finish
and almost breaking both of the world event records. The announcers kept saying
“Here comes Lindy Wall, she’s on a mission!” She went on win both of those
events and make it to the Games with room to spare. It made me think about how
I approach my goals. I set my goals too low for myself and fail to believe that
I can even achieve them. This is such a bad habit and I want to work on this
the most because it holds me back. I achieved every single “goal” that I set in
my mind for myself for this weekend. But then I re-evaluated those goals and
realized that I’m really capable of much much more. I am so excited to train
for next year because I know that I can improve SO much in another year. I need
to quit being afraid to set big goals - because Lindy Wall made it so clear
that if you want something, you just go out and get it. Time to set bigger
goals and be on a mission to achieve them.
